European Union Election Observation Mission to Pakistan 2008

EU Election Observation Mission reaches its full strength

Islamabad – The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) reached its full strength by deploying 31 short term observers (STO) on Wednesday. That brings the total number of the EU election observers to 112.

According to EU Chief Observer Michael Gahler after the deployment of STOs the mission will be able to cover more polling stations over a larger area. “This helps us to ensure more consistent election observation,” Gahler said. He added that the observers will stay in the field beyond election day to observe consolidation of results.

The STOs are from 20 European Union countries as well as Norway and Canada.

The STOs will be deployed for eight days in four provinces – North West Frontier Province, Punjab, Baluchistan and Sindh as well as the Federal Capital of Islamabad.

EU election observers have been in Pakistan since 8 December 2007.
